There are only 17 days left until the Yavapai Humane Society’s fifth annual Walk for the Animals. As of last Friday, more than 100 people and nearly 40 sponsors registered to walk. Together these folks have already raised more than $12,000 to help animals at YHS. This year our goal is 500 walkers to help raise $40,000, so we are well within reach, especially if you and your family and friends register today.

The Walk for the Animals will take place on Saturday, May 14, at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. There will be two courses, a 5k and a 1-mile, to accommodate all ages, leg heights and energy levels. You can run, walk or jog at your own pace. The road is completely paved so child strollers, dog strollers and wheelchairs can all be accommodated. The walk courses are not timed so you can even enjoy a leisurely stroll.

To register, simply visit There you can register online for just $20 per adult, and $10 for youths 11-17. Children 10 and under walk for free with a registered adult! When you sign up, you’ll receive a free T-shirt and a “doggie bag” full of goodies, including great pet product samples and lots of coupons from our pet-loving business sponsors.

When you register, you can even get a personal fundraising page modified with your own photos, videos and story about a special pet in your life, or why you care so much about animals in need. Simply email the link to your fundraising page to friends, families and neighbors or share it on Facebook! Paper donation collection forms are available too, for those who don’t care to have an online fundraising page. Many walkers are surprised by the outpouring of support from their friends and families.

The current top fundraising team leader, “Frankie’s Friends and Family” said, “Our friends and family already know how much we care about the animals at YHS and are ready to help out each year when the Walk for the Animals rolls around.”

This year’s Walk also has fundraising prizes! The top three fundraising teams will receive a variety of perks, including a custom pet portrait with local photographer Larry Kantor, the chance to name a shelter pet, gift certificates for free goodies from local businesses, and more. Our tip? Grow your team to increase your odds of having a top fundraising team to win these cool prizes.

Dogs are welcome to walk with their owners. Dogs must be currently licensed, vaccinated (or receive vaccinations at the YHS Vaccine Booth at the event), and on a leash no more than 6 feet in length in keeping with Prescott’s leash law. Walk officials reserve the right to refuse entry to any dog whose behavior could be dangerous to others. Please use good judgment regarding the temperament of your pet so the event will be safe and enjoyable for everyone.

All proceeds from the event will go to helping the animals at the Yavapai Humane Society. YHS is the largest animal shelter in northern Arizona, rescuing more than 3,000 lost, homeless, abused and neglected pets every year. YHS provides many lifesaving services and programs, which have resulted in YHS ranking as the safest animal shelter in Arizona by the nation’s leading animal shelter watchdog (Animals 24/7) and among the very safest communities in the nation!

YHS’s “Live Release Rate” is also the highest in Arizona and among the highest in the nation at 97 percent. So join the fun and be a part of the humane society we are all creating.
