This month Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) came to the aid of 12 dogs in crisis. The dogs were being kept outside without adequate shelter, little food and water, and most were suffering from severe mange.
The owner of the dogs was doing his best to care for them but there were too many stray dogs on the Navajo Nation Reservation that needed help, and the resources were too great and out of reach. As a result several of the dogs became emaciated and sick.
Blackhat Humane Society reached out to us at YHS hoping we could help. With limited resources Blackhat knew their best chance of saving these dogs was to ask other shelters to aid in their rescue efforts.
After assessing the situation we quickly decided we needed to help these dogs in crisis.
Soon after making that decision our team traveled over 4 hours to the property where we found the dogs in worse shape than we imagined. Our plan to take 5 dogs evolved into taking 12 once we assessed the conditions of the animals. Before leaving the property the dogs were released to YHS. We gave them vaccines, basic medical care, and loaded into our 2 vans. Then we transported the dogs 4 hours back to our shelter where they were more thoroughly examined and medically treated by our veterinary staff.
Like so many others rescued from terrible conditions, these animals need special and costly attention.
While the dogs rescued from the reservation are friendly and social they currently suffer from malnutrition and severe mange. The dogs have matted fur and many of the dogs have torn skin from scratching to relieve the pain of mange. Fortunately, these dogs will heal with our tender love and care and are currently in the compassionate hands of our talented clinic team. Eventually these 12 dogs will be healthy enough to be adopted and will get the second chance they deserve.
If you would like to help give these deserving dogs and other animals in our care a second chance donate today.
