Grant of $50,000 supports efforts to reduce homeless animal population in Yavapai County
Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) is excited to announce it has been awarded an $50,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to support our work in the subsidized spay and neuter surgeries of approximately 600 dogs and cats.
This generous grant from PetSmart Charities will support the our Big Fix program. The Big Fix spay/neuter program assists families and individuals in need by providing free or greatly subsidized spay or neuter surgeries for pet owners who are active or retired military members, or qualify with low-income guidelines.
Dr. Styre, Chief Veterinarian for YHS states, “Spaying and neutering pets is essential not only to help ease the pet overpopulation burden in our community but also to ensure the optimum health and longevity of our companion animals. Spaying and neutering helps reduce unwanted behaviors such as wandering and some forms of aggression as well as reducing the risks of some cancers and expensive complications resulting from unplanned pregnancies. This is truly an instance of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.”
YHS also partners with PetSmart to find homes for homeless pets. “This grant from PetSmart Charities will help us not only in assisting pet owners to obtain this important procedure, it will help save lives,” said Dr. Styre. “We are grateful to PetSmart for their generous contribution and ongoing partnership with YHS.”

About PetSmart Charities®
We envision a world in which every pet has a lifelong, loving home. PetSmart Charities® and PetSmart Charities® of Canada are nonprofit animal welfare organizations that save the lives of homeless pets. More than 400,000 dogs and cats find homes each year through our adoption program in all PetSmart® stores and our sponsored adoption events.
PetSmart Charities grants more money to directly help pets in need than any other animal welfare group in North America, with a focus on funding spay/neuter services that help communities solve the problem of pet overpopulation. PetSmart Charities is a 501(c)(3) organization and PetSmart Charities of Canada is a registered charity, separate from PetSmart, Inc. PetSmart Charities® knows this is a problem with a cure. Increased spay/neuter services prevent litters, reducing pet overpopulation from the start. We have subsidized more than 1.4 million spay or neuter surgeries since 2009.
